For the past 50 years, Billboard has been putting together "Hot 100" lists, tracking the most popular songs in the country.
We have billboard's top five "Hot 100" songs since it started keeping track.
You may expect Elvis or The Beatles to top the list, but that's not the case. Neither even cracked the top five.
In fifth, the Macarena. It took the whole nation by storm in the late 90's. Pretty much everyone has done the dance at one point or another.
In fourth, Leann Rimes' "How Do I Live.”
Bobby Darin makes it in number three with his 1959 Grammy winning hit "Mack the Knife."
Santana, teaming up with Rob Thomas, comes in second. Their song "Smooth" was the top hit in the summer of 1999.
And at the top of Billboard's top hit chart of all time: Chubby Checker's "The Twist."
So you might be wondering how this list was put together. Billboard admits it wasn't completely objective, but they tried to base it mainly on album sales, radio play and overall popularity.
