Building upon the topic from last week, we decided to devote a night to the parents for a “pep talk.” Ron Patulski, the owner of Training Champions Institute, has had some experience speaking with groups on positive change, both physically and mentally. One of the most compelling points was that kids are always looking for role models, and parents are the first and best models. What parents say will have a lot more credibility if they "walk the talk," and follow through on what they're suggesting. One of the most compelling points was that kids are always looking for role models, and parents are the first and best models. What parents say will have a lot more credibility if they "walk the talk," and follow through on what they're suggesting. (Ron used alcohol use/abuse as an example... It's hard for a kid to buy into a message of abstinence from a parent who abuses booze.)
Ron also pitched the three elements of realization to successfully change any behavior...
1) Admit that it's broken.
- We must be willing to admit that the current approach is not working and could potentially even be contributing to the problem.
2) Believe that it can be changed.
- We must be understanding in knowing that things can be different.
3) Believe that you hold the power to change it.
- Take responsibility for the action and realize that “it is up to you” (and do not cast blame on anyone else...)
Ron also added that one non-negotiable change for the entire family should be the exchange of soda for water. “The simplest change that most families can make is cutting out the soda and drinking water instead.”
The end of this week marks the 6-week point where the group has the opportunity to cash in on a fantastic incentive. Check next week’s blog entry for details…
