"Orenda" is the Iroquois word for the force of nature that gives people the power to do mighty things. And the kids who visit Orenda Springs believe they can do just about anything!
John Powers and his fellow teachers were frustrated with the growing apathy they found in their classrooms. They knew that the best way to teach children is to motivate them, to get them excited about learning... and about life. Powers took a leave of absence from the Syracuse City School District to open his "Classroom in the Woods" between Marcellus and Camillus.
Classes from all over Central New York spend a day at Orenda Springs. (They use the Iroquois pronunciation, so it sounds like "Olenta.") Kids fly through the air on a zip line, climb to the sky on a rope challenge, and learn that there's a lot more to life than video games and a sedentary lifestyle.
Powers says they go back to school recharged, excited about learning. Because of that, their attendance improves, their behavior improves, and their grades often improve across the board... even on state tests.
Orenda Springs welcomes classes year-round. You can learn more about the program, and read notes from kids who've visited, at their website,
