A health alert for parents. Your child probably needs to take a Vitamin D supplement.
To meet the new recommendation of 400 units a day, children will need to take supplement. That includes breast fed infants and many teenagers who drink little or no milk. If your child drinks four cups of milk a day, they would get ample Vitamin D and would not need a supplement.
Vitamin D keeps bones strong and might reduce the risks for cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
The nation's leading pediatricians group says children from newborns to teens should get double the usually recommended amount of Vitamin D because of evidence that it may help prevent serious diseases.
