“Recently I heard that being overweight greatly increases the chance for prostate cancer and the chance for being permanently incontinent after prostate surgery. Is this fact, fiction or a little of both?” Clay
It's a little bit of both. We called a Professor of Urology at University Hospital. He says there are a number of studies looking into this to see if in fact, there is a relationship. As for incontinence, it's a potential risk even without the weight factor... complications of incontinence occurs in two percent of patients. Obesity definitely makes it worse because of the extra intra-abdominal pressure on the bladder, and markedly obese patients are not even recommended to have the surgery.
