No Ban On Cough Meds

Topping tonight's "Health Headlines", a proposal to ban cough and cold medicines for young children has been scrapped. The FDA says a ban might only drive parents to give adult medicines to their little ones and that could be even worse. Earlier this year, the FDA warned parents against giving over the counter cold medicines to children younger than 2. The FDA says it won't pull the products for children ages 2 to 6 until they have more information about whether they're safe and effective. Leading pediatricians groups are pushing for a ban because they claim the medicines don't work and send thousands of kids to the E.R. every year.
