“I heard that there was a generic drug for Lipitor. Do you know the name of this drug, and if it's true that it is a true generic for Lipitor?” (Received Online)
There isn't a generic for Lipitor yet. A pharmacist we called says the patent on Lipitor is in effect for another year or two. In the meantime, you do have some cost-saving options...
A lot of people saving money by switching to other generic drugs in the same family as Lipitor, for example, Zocor. The generic of which is Simvastatin.
If you want to stay on Lipitor, try pill-splitting. Ask your doctor to write a greater strength prescription. For example, if you normally take a 10 milligram tablet of Lipitor. Ask your doctor for 20 milligram tablets -- they're almost the same price for a one-month supply. Thirty, 10-milligram tablets cost about 93-dollars. Fifteen pills of 20 milligrams of Lipitor costs 72-dollars. Split the 20 milligram tablets for a savings of about 20-dollars a month.
